JPG OR JPEG? WHAT ARE PIXELS? WHAT IS DPI? HOW DPI IS DIFFERENT FROM PPI? WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RASTER AND VECTOR IMAGES? WHAT ARE GIFs? LET'S EXPLORE!!!

JPG OR JPEG

You might have noticed images with the extension as . JPG or . JPEG . What they mean and are they different ?

JPEG stands for "Joint Photographic Experts Group" . It's actually the name of the group that developed the image format. Whenever an image is saved as .jpeg , it is compressed (file size is reduced) , also known as loosy compression and , as the name suggests some image quality is closed during compression (but it is so slight that the average visitor can't tell). JPEGs are primarily used on web and specially in digital camera( as it allows to fit more images in the memory card).
And when it comes to jpg , it's same as jpeg. Yes, you read it right. There's actually no difference between them . The only thing is number of characters used. .JPG only exists because in earlier versions of Windows (MS-DOS 8.3 and FAT-16 file systems) they required a three letter extension for the file names. So .jpeg was shortened to .jpg. So, it is simply came into existence because of limitations. Newer versions of Windows of course now accept more characters in their file extension, however, .jpg was already being used by a majority of people so it still is the most common extension.

WHAT ARE PIXELS

Pixels ( pix= picture, el= element) are basically the small elements of the digital image or graphics. They are basic building blocks of a digital image (these small little dots are what make up the images). The screen is divided up into a matrix of thousands or even millions of pixels but we are not able to see individual pixel as they are very small. But in a way we can say that it is good as we don't want to see blocky or pixelated images .

Each pixel can only be one color at a time. However, since they are so small, pixels often blend (mix) together to form various shades and blends of colors.

Pixels determine the quality of the image . Its size will vary depending on the resolution of the monitor. Resolution is measured in PPI( pixels per inch ) means how many pixels are displayed in 1 inch or 2.54 centimeters. Higher resolution mean that there are more pixels per inch (PPI), resulting in a high-quality, crisp image. A lower resolution results in less PPI and if these are less and large in size, they make images look blocky or pixilated and bad.

WHAT IS DPI

DPI stands for Dots Per Inches. The resolution of a printer or a scanner is measured in dots per inch. More dots per inch , less space between the dots and more smoothly color droplets (color drops coming out of the printer during printing)  gets to mix with each other and therefore it give clear image. If there are less no. of dots between 1 inch , the printed image's quality gets reduced as the space between the dots increases. By default, 300Dpi is set to get a good and smooth result. Choosing the higher print quality usually reduces the speed of printing each page.

How is it different from PPI?

Pixels per inch ( ppi ) is a measure of display image sharpness and dpi is for the print medium.

RASTER AND VECTOR IMAGES

Raster images are the images which are made or compiled using pixels and therefore , they have pixel based nature. So when they are zoomed in, they look pixelated and have jagged edges. This is because we are stretching the pixels over a larger area, thus making them look less sharp.
Raster images are mainly for the Web , meaning they are preferred for all images found on the internet.

Vector images are the images that are built by mathematical formulas. They are better than raster images as they can be resized without any loss in quality. When you zoom in a vector image, the edges of each object within the image stay smooth and clean. It’s also important to take file size into consideration. If you are looking for a smaller file size, stick with vector images.
Vector images are generally used for logos, graphics, and text because they can be resized in any direction without distortion.

WHY SHOULD I USE RASTER IMAGE?

The main advantage of raster images is an opportunity to create rich and full-colour images like photographs. Each pixel that a raster image contains can be a different colour, that's why you can create a image using variations of colours and their shades.

JPG (OR JPEG) ARE RASTER IMAGES .

GIFs

You might have sent some gifs to your friends but what is it ?
GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format. GIF format has a special feature—it can also be used to create animated images . Yes, they are animated images not any short video (you might have confused with that). They are actually like flipbooks. They are a series of images that will loop continuously and doesn't require anyone to press play. GIFs often have a large file size (more than MP4 video files) because they’re uncompressed.
